Sit and Stitch, Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30, for those 8 yo and up. No registration required.

Bring a work in progress or your own yarn and needles or hooks. Don't know how to knit? We'll teach you the basics — casting on, the knit and purl stitches, and casting off. Knitters and crocheters of all levels are welcome to join this circle for stitching and community. Basic knitting instruction will be provided by  librarians and staff members of the Children's Department.

For those new to knitting, suggested supplies are US size 8 wood needles and a skein of smooth and light-color worsted-weight yarn. The Library will not have supplies available.

EARTHPLACE
Earthplace Events from April through August

Westport Public Art Collections (WestPAC) + MoCA\CT present Art, Jazz + the Blues, February 26 - June 7.
This exhibition celebrates the intersections between visual art, jazz, and the blues, musical forms deeply rooted in African American traditions. Drawing from the rich holdings of the Westport Public Art Collections, the exhibition centers on Giants of the Blues, a sweeping series of seven group portraits by Westport native Eric von Schmidt (1931–2007) honoring blues, jazz, and folk musicians from the 1920s to the 1960s. Complementing von Schmidt’s paintings are over fifty artworks depicting musicians, inspired by musical themes, or exploring the resonances between musical and visual forms.
Join us for the opening reception on Thursday February 26th 6-8pm, with live blues piano by Mark Naftalin. Register here ($10 general admission; $8 student/senior, under 12 and MoCA members free).
Come back Saturday Feb 28th 4-7pm for a special film screening of Leadbelly (1976), photographer and director Gordon Parks’ powerful semi-biographical film about the life and music of Huddie Ledbetter, followed by a discussion with Prof. Sheila Curran Bernard, author of Bring Judgment Day: Reclaiming Lead Belly’s Truths from Jim Crow’s Lies (2024). Register here.
