No Place for Hate in the Westport Public Schools

Reinforcing our commitment to building a more inclusive school community, the district is participating in the No Place for Hate initiative, a program designed to create and sustain communities where all students can thrive.

"We're thrilled to bring No Place for Hate to our district. This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment where every student can thrive. By engaging our entire school community in this important work, we're not just talking about respect and understanding – we're actively building the kind of schools we want to see," Faith Sweeney, CMS Literacy Coach and No Place for Hate Coordinator.

What is No Place for Hate?

No Place for Hate is an initiative of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) that provides schools and communities with an organizing framework for combating bias, bullying, and hatred. The program aims to foster a culture of respect and create a safe learning environment for all students.

Why We're Participating

We believe that every student deserves to learn in an environment free from bias and discrimination. By implementing No Place for Hate, we are:

  • Empowering our students to become leaders in creating a more inclusive school climate
  • Equipping our staff with tools to address bias and bullying effectively
  • Building a stronger, more united school community

Our Progress

We're excited to share our journey as we implement No Place for Hate across our district:

  • June 2023: Decision made to adopt No Place for Hate
    BMS faculty meeting introducing NPFH

Introducing No Place for Hate at a BMS faculty meeting.

  • Early 2024: No Place for Hate coordinators identified for each school building
  • Fall 2024: Coordinator training and district-wide onboarding completed
  • By November 1, 2024: No Place for Hate committees will be formed in each school
  • By December 2024:  District-wide launch of the NPFH program in schools

What's Next?

Throughout the school year, each school will implement three activities focused on:

  1. Identity
  2. Bias
  3. Bullying and proactive responses

These activities will engage students in discussions and actions that promote understanding, respect, and inclusion.
