John Bayers is an engaging, thoughtful and compassionate leader with over 20 years of experience in education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Germanic Studies from Boston College, a Master of Arts in Technology in Education from Fairfield University and a Sixth Year Diploma in Educational Leadership from Southern Connecticut State University.

John’s career as an elementary teacher started in the Fairfield Public Schools. After spending nearly 10 years as a classroom teacher, including two years with a group of teachers opening the newly built Burr Elementary School, John went on to finish his tenure in Fairfield as an Instructional Improvement / Talented and Gifted teacher.

In 2007 John began his tenure in Westport as an Assistant Principal at Coleytown Elementary School. Recognized for his exceptional leadership skills, he was appointed Principal of Greens Farms Elementary School in 2008. John served in this role for seven years, helping lead a school that prides itself in meeting the needs of all children.

During the summer of 2016 John was appointed as the Director of Human Resources and General Administration. His strong interpersonal skills as well as his ability to build consensus among all stakeholders has allowed John to support the personnel needs of nearly 1,000 employees across the district.

John resides in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he enjoys spending time with his wife Meg and his sons Matthew and Gavin.

Westport Public Schools is proud to announce that Faith Sweeney has been selected to receive the Connecticut Education Association’s Mahatma Gandhi-Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award. The award recognizes an individual who has developed or implemented a program in a school or community that advances peace education, promotes cooperation, supports the peaceful resolution of conflict, and expands opportunities for students and educators.
