Director of Technology
Natalie Carrignan has been the Director of Technology for the Westport Public Schools since 2006. In addition to managing the technology department, she is in charge overseeing the information and technology literacy (ITL) curriculum and department which is staffed by our library media specialists and technology teachers. Natalie is also the district testing coordinator.
Natalie began her career in Stratford, CT in 1992 as a fifth/sixth grade language arts and social studies teacher. She transferred to second grade two years later and fell in love with that age group and curriculum. She was part of the district curriculum committees and participated in specialized reading and writing training within the district. In 1995 there was a national movement to connect every school to the internet (via dial-up) entitled Connect ‘95. Natalie volunteered to help the library media specialist set up and figure out the Internet-enabled computer. She was hooked! She became a teacher leader in using technology in her classroom and in training her colleagues.
Natalie holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Connecticut State University, a Master in Teaching degree from Sacred Heart University, and a Sixth-Year Certificate in Administration from Sacred Heart. After being bit by the computer bug, Natalie furthered her education in the technology field and became a certified Novell instructor (CNI) and a certified Microsoft trainer (MCT). Natalie holds several technical certifications including A+, Network +, LCS, CNA, and MCSE.
Adult education became a passion of hers, so she left the K-12 system and dedicated herself to teaching adults network engineering full time. That lasted 18 months and Natalie found she missed the teachers and children. She returned to the Stratford schools as the Manager of Information Technology. She had found a great intersection of all four of her passions: education, teaching adults, technology, and leadership.
Since joining Westport in 2006 Natalie has been part of the leadership team on many levels and involved in supporting the integration of technology into teaching and learning throughout all of the curricula. She feels lucky to have been able to present at state and national conferences as well as to her fellow Westport colleagues.
In her free time, Natalie loves going to the theatre and historical sites. At the moment her free-time is very limited as she is busy chauffeuring her two active teenage daughters to all of their events, which is just fine with her.
