Three students from Staples High School are participating in the final round of the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair. To make it to this round, Will Boberski, Tessa Cassell, and Sara De Pinho have competed against hundreds of students in grades 7-12 who reside or are enrolled in schools in Connecticut and some bordering New York towns.

The Fair is one of the ways the Connecticut Science Fair Association, Inc. recognizes and offers opportunities for students to engage with leaders in the field of science and engineering. You can see the students’ projects by looking up their names on the public viewing portal. On Saturday, March 16, at Quinnipiac University the final project winners in the categories of Physical Sciences and Life Sciences will be announced and awarded all-expense paid trips to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair.

“It’s an amazing achievement to have three of our students excel to the final round from such a large pool of talented entrants,” said John DeLuca, 6-12 Science Department Coordinator, Westport Public Schools. “In addition to recognizing the hard work and commitment of our students, it’s a testament to Amy Parent who successfully revamped our Scientific Research Honors class.”

With the mission of preparing Staples students to succeed in an evolving and increasingly competitive research landscape, Parent updated the course in this, her first year of teaching it.

All three of the students representing Staples in the final round of the Fair are in the course, which requires students to produce original scientific research in a field of their choice using skills including the scientific method, statistics, and basic laboratory techniques to produce a research project.
