Our Teachers' Tips on Learning and Practicing

Tips for learning a foreign language

  • Immerse yourself in authentic content (podcasts, videos, books) featuring the target accent or language.
  • Practice shadowing: repeat after native speakers to mimic their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Learn the phonetic alphabet to understand and reproduce unfamiliar sounds accurately.
  • Use language learning apps or flashcards to memorize new alphabet characters or grammar rules.
  • Find a language exchange partner or tutor to practice with and receive feedback.
  • Record yourself speaking and compare it to native speakers to identify areas for improvement.
  • Break down complex grammar structures into smaller, manageable parts and practice each separately.
  • Use mnemonic devices or create stories to remember new alphabet characters or grammar rules.
  • Focus on one aspect (accent, alphabet, or grammar) at a time to avoid overwhelming yourself.
  • Be patient and consistent; regular practice is key to adapting to new language elements.

How family members can engage with their language learner at home

  • Encourage daily exposure: Have the student listen to radio, TV, or music in the target language for 5-10 minutes each day.
  • Utilize language learning apps: Support the use of apps like Quizlet to increase vocabulary and practice skills.
  • Engage with diverse media: Stay connected to the language through various forms of media, including books, podcasts, and online content.
  • Practice pattern recognition: Help the student look for patterns in the language to make educated guesses about meaning and context.
  • Show interest in their progress: Ask what they've learned in class and request materials from teachers to reinforce learning at home.
  • Create interactive experiences: Engage in activities that encourage curiosity and use of the target language, such as ordering food in a restaurant that uses that language.
  • Learn alongside them: Consider using language learning programs yourself to support and motivate the student.
  • Encourage immersion opportunities: If possible, support study abroad or language exchange programs for real-world practice.
  • Make it a daily habit: Dedicate a few minutes each day to engage with the language through various activities.
  • Foster a supportive environment: Become part of a learning support system by providing resources, encouragement, and opportunities for practice.
