The Westport Public Schools World Languages program is guided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency, the nation's premier organization for language teaching professionals. 

In 2024, the ACTFL revised its guidelines to improve clarity and accessibility and enhance their utility by aligning them to key documents, including:
