Literacy: Word Recognition

Word recognition is a fundamental skill in early literacy development. In kindergarten, children begin to learn strategies to decode new words and to identify familiar words by sight. This process helps build the foundation for reading fluency and comprehension.

During this stage, children typically learn to:

  • Identify and manipulate sounds in words
  • Connect letters with their sounds
  • Blend sounds together to form words
  • Recognize high-frequency sight words

Phonological Awareness

Phonological awareness is a child’s ability to hear, recognize, and play with the sounds in spoken words. It includes skills like rhyming, breaking words into syllables, and noticing the individual sounds (phonemes) in words.

This skill is an essential part of the word recognition strand in the Reading Rope because it helps children understand how spoken words connect to written words. Strong phonological awareness makes it easier for kids to sound out words when learning to read.

Decoding

Decoding is a child’s ability to use letter-sound knowledge to read words. It means breaking a word into its sounds, blending them together, and recognizing the word correctly. Decoding is a key part of the word recognition strand in the Reading Rope, helping children move from sounding out words to reading them smoothly and automatically. When children become strong decoders, they can read new words more easily and build confidence in their reading skills.

Sight Word Recognition

Sight word recognition, according to Scarborough’s Reading Rope, refers to a child's ability to instantly recognize words without having to sound them out. This skill develops as children repeatedly see and practice words, allowing them to read more fluently and effortlessly. It is part of the word recognition strand of the Reading Rope, which helps build strong reading skills by making reading smoother and faster. When children can recognize many words by sight, they can focus more on understanding what they read instead of struggling to decode each word.
