Civics Hub
Welcome to the Civics Hub!
Civics education is the study of how people participate in the government, which includes foundational knowledge of the history, principles, and foundations of our American democracy. When we engage in civic learning, we practice how to participate and contribute appropriately to civic and democratic processes, including discussions of real issues in society.
Our Civics Hub was created to make civic learning fun and engaging for all. Civic engagement benefits our classrooms, schools, communities, and nation in powerful ways.
The Westport Public Schools has developed lessons and resources as part of our Civics Hub this election season. U.S. Presidential elections are always an exciting opportunity to engage students in civic learning and we continue to follow years of tradition where social studies educators gather the summer before the presidential election to collaborate and plan for our students.
The objective in all of our classes will be to teach students about civics and model civic engagement in order to support their development as informed and engaged citizens. While there might be a lot of intense, passionate, and, at times, divisive conversations outside of our schools, we work hard to foster productive and respectful discourse in classrooms through a nonpartisan teaching approach. Our schools and classrooms should always be spaces where students feel a sense of belonging as part of a community of learners.
